Situation
Our client faced challenges in building and successfully implementing a succession plan. The Founder and CEO, a father, lacked confidence in his successor, his son, and sought support to prepare him for taking over the company’s day-to-day operations. To facilitate this process, the client hired Proxxy to guide the successor in readying himself for the CEO role and to manage the essential initiatives for a smooth transition. Succession planning is inherently complex, and when it involves family members, it becomes even more challenging. Typically, a successful family succession process can take two to three years to complete, requiring significant preparation and alignment between parties.
Solution
Proxxy began with targeted coaching conversations to assess the successor’s readiness for CEO responsibilities. These sessions covered critical areas such as executive presence, sales leadership, management methodologies, employee performance and development, company performance reporting, and corporate communications. Through these discussions, Proxxy established a foundation for building the successor’s leadership competencies.
Following the coaching phase, Proxxy conducted a company Growth Stage Assessment for both the successor and the Founder/CEO. This is to gauge alignment on the company’s growth trajectory. By analyzing the Growth Stage results, Proxxy identified gaps in perspective and focus between the two. This enabled the team to develop specific initiatives to unify the Founder/CEO and his successor around a shared vision for succession. Once this vision was established, Proxxy collaborated with the successor to design and implement these initiatives. This, in turn, ensured he could demonstrate his readiness to take on the CEO role effectively.
Outcome
Through Proxxy’s structured support, the successor successfully staged and implemented the necessary initiatives to show his readiness for the CEO position. This rigorous process, which usually takes between two and three years, was done in just 16 months, allowing for an accelerated and effective transition from the Founder/CEO to his son.
